How a sunrise alarm works, and who it's for
A regular alarm goes from silence to noise in a second. A sunrise alarm takes a different approach: it starts glowing before your alarm time and slowly gets brighter and whiter, the way a room fills with light at dawn. By the time the alarm sound plays, the room is already bright.
What actually happens
On the okvella Sunrise Wake-Up Light & Sound, you choose how long the sunrise lasts, from 10 to 60 minutes. The light starts as a dim, deep amber (around 1800K, similar to candlelight) and warms up to a bright daylight white (up to 6500K). At your alarm time, one of 7 built-in sounds plays, so you have a backup if you sleep through the light.
It works the other way at night too. Sunset mode starts bright and dims slowly to off while you settle down, so you don't have to reach over and switch off a lamp.
Who tends to like it
- Dark-morning risers. In winter, or if you get up before the sun, the room is often pitch black when the alarm goes off.
- People who hate loud alarms. The sound still plays, but you're usually half awake already.
- Shared bedrooms. Light wakes the person facing it more than a loud alarm wakes everyone.
Setting it up well
- Put it on your nightstand, roughly at head height and facing you, not behind you.
- Start with a 30-minute sunrise and adjust after a week.
- Keep the backup sound on until you know how you respond to the light.
- Use blackout curtains if streetlights reach your bed, so the sunrise is the main light you see.
A sunrise light is a comfort and routine product, not a medical device. If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, talk to a doctor.
